In response to the nationwide lockdowns during the Covid 19 pandemic, Elinor created the Homemade Knitting Machine. This enabled her to continue teaching all domestic knitting machine techniques, online, to the students at the University of Huddersfield, whilst in their homes. She created videos showing how to make your own machine and how to make your own yarn out of household items.
Elinor, along with Dr. Jade Lord, continued to utilise the homemade machine when in person teaching commenced, encouraging students to be more experimental with the materials they knitted with and made their machines from. Evidenced by work created by the graduating final years of 2020, whose work included a machine made from coloured sticks of ice that melted and dyed the yarn whilst knitting
Elinor and Jade went on to write and present a paper about teaching using the homemade knitting machine at the GLAD conference 2021.
